Purpose: This document provides step-by-step instructions for managing skills in a Course in Calibrate, including reviewing assigned skills and resolving skill suggestions.
Audience: This document is meant to be used by Editors to manage the skills in a Course for an academic institution.
Assumption: This guide assumes the Course already exists. In the event it doesn’t, you’ll have to create it first. The detailed steps for creating a Course can be found in the Create a Course User Guide. Currently Courses can only be created by Content Managers.
This document is not meant to be used for editing Courses. Editing a Course includes editing Course details; adding/removing Editors; creating/editing Course Outcomes; and deleting a Course. The detailed steps for editing an Award can be found in the Edit a Course User Guide.
Before you begin: Courses in Calibrate typically represent actual courses in the curriculum. Courses include skills and can optionally include learning outcomes. They allow educators to identify the particular skills a Course and its learning outcomes address. Courses are also an integral part of the Award alignment process. The skills included in a Course facilitate Award alignment by addressing the skill gaps between the Award and its Target Job Profiles.

Instructions:
Locate the Course
1] After you log in, the Calibrate home page appears. Start by clicking the hamburger menu icon in the upper left of the page.
2] In the expanded menu, click Courses.
3] The Courses list appears.
NOTE: There are three ways to locate the Course whose skills you want to manage:
|
4] To use the search box to locate a Course, enter the Course name in the search box (Courses appear automatically).
NOTE: When you use the search box to find a Course, the list returned may be so long that you will have to use the page controls to locate it within the search results. If so, see steps 7 and 8 for more details. |
5] To filter by Tags, start typing a Tag in the Filter by textbox.
6] A list of Tags appears. Click on the desired Tag.
7] The other way to locate a Course is to navigate through the list using the page controls at the bottom of the list. You can go one page at a time by clicking the ">".
NOTE: Courses are arranged alphabetically. |
8] Or you can jump directly to a specific page in the Course list by clicking the down arrow next to the page number and then clicking on the page you want to jump to from the list.
9] When you locate the Course you want to manage, click on it. The Course Dashboard appears.
NOTE: Courses are in one of two states: Draft or Published. You can tell which state it’s in by looking just above the Course title on the Course Dashboard. Which state it is in is important because Published versions can be used by Awards and Draft versions cannot. |
Resolve Pending Skill Suggestions
NOTE: Your primary job as a Editor is to accept or reject pending skill suggestions in a Course. Pending skill suggestions are skills which other Editors suggest should be in the Course. |
10] If the course you’re managing is in the Published state, click the Revise button in the upper right of the Course Dashboard. Otherwise go to step 11.
11] Editing is enabled on the Coarse Dashboard.
12] To accept or reject pending suggested skills, start by clicking the Resolve button on the right side of the Course Dashboard.
NOTE: The number of pending skill suggestions you have to evaluate is right above “Pending Suggestions” on the Coarse Dashboard. |
13] The Resolve Suggestions page appears.
NOTE: The skills in the Pending Suggestions list are grouped into skill categories. The title of the skill category is at the top of the skills in that category in bold font. |
14] Go through the list of pending suggested skills on the left side, hovering your mouse over each one as you go. When you hover your mouse over a skill, a checkbox appears to the left of the title.
15] To act on a skill, check the checkbox. The Course Details section on the right activates.
16] To see the Award details, click the down arrow to the right of the Award title.
17] To add the pending suggested skill to the Course, click the Accept button. To not add the skill to the Course, click Reject.
18] If you accept the suggestion, an Accepted flag is added to the right of the skill title.
19] If you reject the suggestion, the skill title gets a strikethrough.
20] If you want to perform the same action, accept or reject, on every skill in a Category, hover your mouse over the Category title and a check box appears.
21] Selecting the Category checkbox selects every skill in that Category. Then click either Accept or Reject as before.
NOTE: If you’re not sure whether to accept or reject a suggested skill, and you prefer another Editor make the decision, just ignore that skill and move onto the next one. |
22] In the event that the list of pending suggestions is long and you only want to act on only one or a few skills, you can locate them by searching for them. To search for a particular skill, click on Filter at the top of the Pending Suggestions list.
23] The search box appears.
24] Start entering the title of the skill you seek. Search results appear automatically. When you locate the skill you want to act on, go back to step 14.
25] When you’re done resolving pending suggestions, click the Finish button in the upper right. That takes you back to the Course Dashboard.
Review Assigned Skills
NOTE: Assigned skills are skills which are already assigned to a Course. As you review the assigned skills, you may find you want to add additional skills to the Course or remove assigned skills from the Course. You can do both while you’re reviewing assigned skills. |
26] To review the assigned skills, on the right side of the Course Dashboard, click the Review button.
27] The Manage Skills page appears.
28] On the left side of the page, click the down arrow to the right of a skill Category title to review the skills in that Category.
29] The skills in that Category appear.
Remove Skills From a Course
30] To remove a skill from a Course, hover your mouse over the Skill title and the three dot menu icon appears on the right.
31] Click the three dots menu icon and a menu pops up.
32] Click Remove in the menu. The skill title gets a strikethrough and a "Removed" flag is added. The skill is removed from the Course.
Assign Skills to Course Outcomes
NOTE: You can only assign skills to Course Outcomes if the Course Outcomes have already been created. If you need to add a Course Outcome to a Course, see the Edit a Course User Guide. |
33] To assign a skill to one or more Course Outcomes, hover your mouse over the Skill title on the left side and click the three dot menu icon.
34] From the pop up menu, click Manage Outcomes. The Manage Outcomes window appears.
35] Find the Course Outcome(s) you want to assign to that skill to by scrolling through the list or entering the Course Outcome title into the search box in the upper right corner.
36] Select the checkbox to the left of each Course Outcome you want to assign the skill to.
37] If you want to assign the skill to all the Course Outcomes, select the Outcome checkbox at the top of the list.
38] When you've selected all the Course Outcomes you want to assign that skill to, click the Update button in the lower right corner.
39] Repeat steps 33 – 38 for every skill you want to assign Course Outcomes to.
Add Skills to a Course
NOTE: The Library on the right side of the page is organized into skill Categories. Each skill Category contains one or more specific skills. You can tell it’s a skill Category if it does not have a “+” to the left of the title. |
NOTE: There are two ways to locate a particular skill in the Library: 1) scrolling or 2) searching. |
40] To locate a skill to add by scrolling, scroll through the Library on the right. Keep in mind the skills are arranged alphabetically by skill Category, not by skill.
41] When you locate the skill Category that contains the skill you seek, click the down arrow to the right of the Category name.
42] The skills in that Category appear.
43] To add a skill, click the “+” to the left of the skill title.
44] The skill is added to the Skills in Course list on the left within its skill Category. If the skill Category didn’t previously exist in the list, it is added as well.
45] To locate a skill by searching, click Filter at the top of the Library.
46] The Library search box appears.
47] Begin entering the title of the skill you seek. Search results appear automatically.
48] When you locate the skill you want to add, click the “+” to the left of the skill title.
49] To view the skill you just added to the Skills in Course list, click the Category title or the down arrow "ᴠ" to the right of the Category title.
50] To quickly locate a skill in the Skills in Course list, click the filter icon.
51] The Skills in Course search box appears.
52] Start typing the title of the skill you want to find into the search box. The results will appear automatically.
53] When you have all the skills in the Course as you want, click the Finish button in the upper right corner. That takes you back to the Course Dashboard.
Publish the Updated Course
NOTE: After you’ve managed the skills, it’s important to publish the Course. Publishing the Course means any Award that includes this Course can now update the Award to the new version of the Course with the changes you just made. |
54] When you’ve resolved all the pending skills and you’ve reviewed all the assigned skills and everything is as you want it, click the Publish button in the upper right of the Course Dashboard. The Course status will change from Draft to Published.
